The "I Am" App - Affirmations at Your Fingertips

Jan 14, 2022

When it comes to our cell phone, I am a big proponent of less is more. Our cell phone can be a big contributor distraction from our current emotions, checking out to 'take a break' and/or the illusion of 'productivity' to make us feel accomplished when really we just checked our email 3 mins ago.

What if we could us our cell phone to PROMOTE and enhance our self care practice?

Today's blog post will be a series of blog posts that are aimed at sharing apps that enhance our Self Care. These apps promote self care that replenish our mind so that we can refuel and be left wishing we had those 15 mins of mindless scrolling back.

For a full list, head to our blog home page.

Its not a hard choice on what our favorite, most used self care app is on our phone. Very simply, its the "I Am" app made by Monkey Taps. The app is #8 within Health and Fitness on the Apple App store and has a 4.9 rating with 256K ratings. So, very apparently, it's not just us who fell in love.

The "I AM" App

Affirmations are a huge part of my everyday self care habit. My goal is to have them be a part of your daily self care as well.

Why? Affirmations rewire your brain from a place of negativity to a place of confidence, joy and fulfillment. Really, there is scientific evidence that as you practice affirmations you can change the default in how you think from one of negativity to one of deep positivity.

I gave an intro into affirmations in a recent blog post. If you want to learn more about them, definitely go check that out.

The "I AM" app is a constant stream of affirmations. Simply swipe up to get a new affirmation.

  • One bad day does not make me a bad person. It makes me human
  • I have been through so much but I am still standing.
  • I pay attention to my thoughts and keep them positive.

The best way to use this app is to read the affirmation to yourself slowly, either out loud or to yourself, and pause. Let the affirmation resonate, sink in and affirm. Take a deep breath in and out as you read it and allow time to internalize it.

Then if you want to swipe up for a new one, swipe up and repeat the above. Take your time with each affirmation to gain maximum effectiveness.

This is not an endless scroll activity. If you find yourself swiping up quickly, you will not be internalizing the affirmation, which means the affirmations will not be doing the work that you really want them to be doing (changing your mindset).

If you are more of a visual person... watch as well

Personalize with Categories

At the bottom of the app is a categories tab that helps you choose which type of affirmation you would like to receive. From "Taking Care of Yourself" to "Connecting to Others" to "Improving your Mindset" there is a category that is sure to speak to you in whatever state of mind you are currently wanting to booster with positivity. I have had mine set on body positivity for the past several months but feel like transitioning into "New Beginnings" as Michelle and I take this leap in our business life.

Categories include:

Use Widgets to Keep Front and Center

Okay. For me this was a game changer. When Apple came out with the ability to put widgets on your home screen (or screens), the "I Am" app builders created three sizes to fit your home screen needs: small, medium, and large.

Within the app, you have the ability to change three things:

  1. Theme: What it looks like
  2. Frequency: How often the app refreshes the quote
  3. Categories: Which categories you would like to feature (can be 1 or more)

Widgets allow us to have affirmations that are catered to our current mindset at our fingertips, front and center.

Imagine picking up your phone. Having an affirmation at the top of your screen, before heading to check your latest notification. They give us the opportunity to take a pause, reset and affirm ourselves to the person we want to be at the tip of our fingertips.

Pro vs Free

The free version of this app is amazing. It gives you a set number of categories to choose. In addition to specific affirmation categories, the full function of the widgets will allow you home screen access and access to a new affirmation every time you pickup your phone.

The Pro version is even better. I have purchased it for 2 years in a row now. It's $19.99 for a full year and this will give you the full range of categories. For $20 a year, I love that I can have affirmations to restore my mind in whatever state that mind might be. We are in constant evolution, so what is troubling me today will be different tomorrow and the ability to customize the affirmation the app shows is an easy win for my self care practice.
